2010

WELCOME FROM COACH DANIEL DAVIDSON

Hello everyone!

For those whom I have not had the privilege of meeting yet, my name is Daniel Davidson, and I am the Director of the GW Volleyball Club, as well as the coach of the men's team.  Together with Drew Szabo, the coach of the women's team, we welcome you all to GW (or back to GW, for our returning players).

We are happy you are interested in our program.  Here's a quick overview of GW Club Volleyball:

This is a student-run club, and Joe Verde and Niki Grant serve as co-presidents.  Feel free to reach out to them, any of their cabinet members, myself or Drew if you have any questions.

REC PLAY
There are 2 components to the club.  The first is the rec play sessions. These occur every Monday and Wednesday at the Health and Wellness Center, usually from 4pm-6pm.  These sessions are open to all, are are relaxed sessions.  No RSVP or commitment is needed, and there is no cost.  Our faculty adviser, Prof. John Banzhaf, often steps in to run these sessions.  Most communication regarding rec play and its logistics will come from him.  Per chance you do not receive an email (because you are not on his club distribution list), then email Joe or Niki to see if Weds is on, and sign yourself up at www.gwvolleyball.com.  Note:  the first few sessions can be very overcrowded and chaotic, so please be patient over the first few weeks.

CLUB TEAMS
As most of you know, we run two intercollegiate club teams.  These teams practice 2-3 times a week, and engage in competition against other schools.  The focus of these teams is more competitive.  Both the men's and women's teams will be having tryouts (dates and times not yet finalized).  Though we wish we could take everyone, unfortunately the small amount of court time that the University gives us dictates that we cap our teams to around 15-17 people (only so many can be on a court before it becomes unproductive).

PRE-TRYOUT SESSIONS
We will be sponsoring a few completely optional pre-tryout sessions.  These are intended for individuals who will be trying out for the teams.  Coaches, if even present, will not be doing any evaluation, and focus of these really is just to shake the dust off, get back in the swing of things, meet returning team members, and help determine if our club is right for you.  There is no need to RSVP, attendance will not be taken, and there is no obligation to try-out if you do come.  Of course, you are welcome to bring any friends interested in trying us out.

Please watch for emails announcing date/time changes, but as of now the complete schedule can be found on the "Schedule" page.

There is obviously a lot more to discuss about the season, like tournaments, dues, jerseys, etc.  For now, I would just recommend that everyone come out to the M/W rec sessions (which are low risk and easy to jump in on), and again, don't be too turned off in the first few weeks because of the chaos.  If you are interested in the team, then I highly recommend you also come out to as many of the pre-tryout sessions as you can to get a feel for the team.

Thanks, and I look forward to meeting you all soon.

Daniel Davidson
